Natural Medicine Malarky

I love natural medicine and feature it to be the medicine of choice of the future.
Now, I'm not talking about trauma / battlefield medicine involved in life or death events. I'm referring to the medical choices people make that relates to long/healthy/painless lives of freedom from such situations as diabetes..heart disease...cancer...artheritis...osteoporous...cholesterol...cognitive declines...depression. A recent issue of the Harvard Health Letter (IV 2008) said as much "non-pharmacological approach is as good or better than pills"
As much as I advocate for natural medicine, I am also painfully aware of the amount of poor/exaggerated information/ claims that are made. Now if waving an eagle wing over your head makes your headache go away, then do it twice, but don't start claiming that it somehow removed miasmas from your aura or meridian field. Be willing to admit that your mental state was involved. As a general practitioner in natural medicine , I am still responsible to rule out blatant problems of neurological/orthopedic nature.
In the blogs in the future I'd like to discuss some aspects of natural medicine that often have a root of truth, but are over-hyped, sometimes grossly. These would include HOMEOPATHY/VACCINATIONS.....ENERGY TREATMENTS (REIKI/ EAV MACHINES /CHI MACHINES / VERY LOW FORCE CHIROPRACTIC / COLOUR THERAPY / RADIONICS)..ACUPUNCTURE....APPLIED KINESIOLOGY....SHAMANISM...OMEGA 3 OILS...MEGA DOSES OF NUTRIENTS...MAGIC JUICES FROM FAR AWAY...and claiming that a one remedy will solve all your problems without any responsibility on your part or that basic truths can be ignored if the magic (whether natural or allopathic) pill/treatment is done.
If you are interested in these topics, please feel free to call and we can discuss them before I get around to writing. I hate it when people give up on natural medicine without trying something which is scientifically backed up. Don't get me wrong, what passes for science these days can be a veiled spin for drugs and high tech( read expensive ) rip off. SITES I trust are NUTRI-SPEC.NET / PPNF.COM /KENOGEN.COM /CANCER DECISIONS.COM.
I will be glad when good medicine is what counts , when people are valued more highly than profits. As it is now , I too often see two extremes....drugs/surgery or woo-woo. There is a middle ground of rational medicine. I believe in my lifetime in will be the norm. Thanks for reading, if I can be of service to answer any questions, please feel free to call or write.

NATURAL MEDICINE FIRST

A oft quoted saying in chiropractic school was CHIROPRACTIC FIRST...
DRUGS SECOND...SURGERY LAST. I feature that the fist option/choice should be natural medicine. I can hear some saying that natural medicine is alright for some things , but it's not "real" medicine. I would agree that if you've been shot,, are squirting blood, have a bone sticking out of your skin or any life threatening situation , then you should take aproprate action. Other than trauma related deals (battlefields, car wrecks. etc.) and acute breakdowns of some system (heart attacks, arterial tears, strokes, etc.), western medicine is poor at preventing /treating situations that come on slowly. The case could be made that the majority of all health problems come on gradually, definately all system failures would come under this category.
A second deal with natural vs. "real" medicine is that there is a lot of natural medicine nonsense that is promoted , although to be fair the claims of nat. med. can't hold a candle to the bogus and even deadly pitches made for Rx. Where is the middle ground of just good medicine. That which is the best for the patient. I'm confronted weekly with patients who are caught in the middle. It's your health. Demand information to make your best choices. If I can be of service, please let me know. Thanx for reading.

THE WORLD TOMMORROW-TODAY

I trust all of ya'll had a great end of the year renewal. Although I was never much of a new year resolution type of guy or a big Christmas celebrator ( have always preferred to give gifts and make changes at the time rather than wait), I believe that this time in history is indeed a big deal. For one, there is a chance that someone could be president who tells the truth about our government and society. I'm speaking of Dr. Ron Paul. If you haven't heard of him, I urge you to look into his record and platforms. He's all for getting the federal government off our backs and letting people decide for themselves what they wish to do. If you are for crooks and nannies looking into every nook and crannies then Dr. Paul would not be for you. If you like freedom, he's your man.
In my line of expertise, natural medicine, I would love for there to be a level playing field. To aid and abet the body and its healing is always a great thing and drugs and surgery should be postponed until such time as there is no other choice. Understand please, in cases of life and death (i.e. battlefield situations, bleeds, breaks, abject pain, etc.) the drug and surgery options quickly come to the fore. I would choose them myself. Unfortunately, too many people are unaware of the natural medicine options or are not given scientific/ objective choices. Most M.D.'s think of teas and stinky potions when natural medicine is brought up. What I'm referring to is the pharmaceutical grade use of VITAMINS / MINERALS / AMINO ACIDS plus, of course, proper diet ( less refined carbs and more good protein and vegetables.
If you are aware that you are responsible for your health ( not the government, not big business, not even your genes for the most part) then natural medicine is for you. Please feel free to contact my office with any questions you have about any aspect of your health. It may seem odd to ask a Chiropractor about your bowels or menstrual cycle or heart disease or asthma, but they may be your best source of info about natural medicine. They should be willing to work with you and any other Dr. to find the best medicine for your situation. In the medicine of the future, people will tend to their frame and use food/nutrients as their medicine. Sickness and pain will be the exception rather than the rule and the best doctors will be trying to prevent what they are treating. That time can be now for those who are willing to seek/ ask/ and knock; that are willing to think for themselves. The best to you all in 2008

The Doctor Within

Your body wants to heal, count on it. If you incorporate some basic /simple habits in your life you will allow your body to do what it is trying and always has tried to do. I know trying to make sense out of all the advise you get is hard, especially when your doctors are disagreeing. This is usually true when you are seeing a natural doctor and a regular doctor, but can also show up among doctors of the same discipline . There are natural docs who think meat is bad and fish is great. I think they are wrong. I say that after studying nutrition/ natural medicine for 21 years. I also know that I can be wrong and am willing to change my opinion if I am confronted with new evidence. Until that time ,I tell my patients what I believe to be the truth regardless of what the politically correct or most popular view is. What follows is a collection of health facts I believe are true.

Most people have too little stomach acid ,not too much. The problems with digestion range from heartburn to hemorrhoids.

A lot of problems, especially with women , are from too much pharmaceuticals. Estrogen, allergy pills, thyroid drugs, sleeping pills, psychology drugs. For men blood pressure, cholesterol drugs

A lack of good protein from the 3 F groups (fur /fins/ feathers)

Too much starch/ carbs / sugar (especially fructose )

Too few good minerals

Failing to know the difference between feeling good and being healthy

A lack of limberness in the spine but also the whole body

Believing that covering up the symptom is the same thing as healing

An unwillingness to think for themselves

I truly believe that natural medicine will be the medicine of the future, especially when the present generation comes into their own. As I've said before your body wants to be healthy and strong. Thanx for reading and feel free to call my office for the third opinion.

The Naked Emperor

I'm sure you've all heard of the tale about the emperor who was conned into thinking he was being provided with magic clothes, when in reality he was wearing nothing. It took a small child to be honest enough to say out loud what everyone knew, that the emperor had no clothes.
Can you hear the small child talking about our present state of health care. Excess drugs and surgeries, an unwillingness to be responsible for our own health, a laziness to look for other options and in general an ignoring of the obvious. In my business , I often deal with people who just don't know that there is another world out there besides drugs and surgery. Just as often , though, I deal with people who are too set in their ways to make an effort to change even when presented with other options. I always blame myself first in my failure to communicate, but after 20 years in natural medicine I have to admit that a lot of people would rather suffer than change. It's their situation and I have honor that. You see it was not so much that the weavers conned the ruler as it was that the ruler wanted to believe in magic clothes.
Natural medicine can be fun, easy and so rewarding. The changes needed don't have to be fun sucking-joy killing affair.

Please feel free to set up a consultation to see what your options and choices are for living a great life with real clothes
Thanx for reading this. Dr. Edgerton

Mother's milk

I recently talked with a woman in upper Cleveland Co. who is a great resource for mothers to be. She is the representative of a group called La Leche, which supports and provides information on breast feeding to young mothers ( or to curious doctors such as myself ). Her name is SHERRI STRUBLE and her telephone number is 704-538-9601 e-mail: mstrublefam@aol.com
If you or anyone you know needs some quality info /help on infant care and breast feeding , please give her a shout or contact me and I'll do the best I can for you. My conversation with her was a joy. She seems down to earth and full of practical tips for starting children out good. In these times it'd often hard to find someone who can help mothers out about breast feeding. Even though providing this care for your child may be a little bother , I assure you it is the best. There is no formula made by man that can equal the nourishment GOD provides. Now if the mom is eating junk for her diet the milk will not be as good, but even then it will be superior to store bought.
Breast milk is a specialized form of lymphatic fluid created by the body. The female breast is a lymph gland. For it to operate best the mom needs to be taking a good vitamin/mineral supplement and eating enough meat /protein and good fat (animal fat/coconut oil/ olive oil/butter). Of course good water is needed for all body functions. A great cookbook is by Sally Fallon " Nourishing Traditions". This goes into why the foods you should eat are good and also provides many recipes for those of you who can work a kitchen.
We should be wary of every "new and improved" whatever that comes down the road. Sometimes, actually most of the time, things that that worked for thousands of years will still work today. Let me know if I can be of assistance or if there are any questions you'd like be me to cover. Thanks for reading this.

Cancer Alternatives

Nothing strikes fear more into a person's heart than being told they have cancer. A death sentence. A sudden end to their hopes and dreams. This blog concerns just such a situation. If you are told, by someone who should know, that you have cancer, take it seriously. My suggestion would be to immediately contact the following: Ralph Moss, Ph.D ( Cancerdecisions.com). Dr Moss has a wonderful site and resources for making your next decision. Drugs/ surgery/radiation are the most typical options offered. In their place they are life saving, but as is the case in most medical situations these days, over done. Please understand that cancer takes a while to develop. The body , as a rule , deals with cells out of place or functioning wrong, all the time. For a cancer to have established itself in the body is usually ( in my opinion..always) a sign that something has been ignored for a while. Cancers can be roughly divided into two groups...a tumor growing or a body part/area being destroyed. If a tumor, is it a body part getting bigger or a different type of cell which is growing it should not be (metastasis). In either case the goal is to aid and abet the body in returning to the state of health which it wants to be . Now there may be the need to remove a tumor or even a body part/limb, but as a rule exposing the body to even more stress from drugs/radiation never made sense to me. Some natural medicine sources urge people to go on extended fasts or quit eating nutrient rich foods (protein/fat), but that can be dangerous too in as much as the body needs resources to heal. Taking a controlled fast can be useful and if a cancer is well established too many good nutrients may feed the cancer's growth, so getting good advice is the key to this.
The bottom line no matter what you choose to do , you need to figure out what was causing the problem in the first place and change that behavior . It could be you're using the cell phone too much ( E-M fields), not enough good nutrients, too many drugs (prescription/ OTC/ street ), too much stress for your body to handle, poor elimination of waste products (constipation, lack of clean water, anti perspirents) . As I've said before ,you don't have to be extreme about it all, but you do have to take care of the basics , or some form of health problem will arise.
Thank you for reading this . Next time I'd like to talk about breast feeding for infants and what a great leg up that is for them. I recently talked with the La Leche contact person in Cleveland Co. What a great resource is available here.
